For pain that hasn't settled

Shockwave is usually considered when pain has lasted three months or more and hasn't settled with stretching, rest or new shoes. Heel and Achilles pain are the most common reasons, but it is also used for other soft tissue conditions of the foot, including neuromas, capsulitis and forefoot pain.

It isn't suitable for everyone. Your chiropodist reviews your health history and examines your foot first, then tells you whether shockwave is a reasonable option or whether something else should come first.

How it works

Four steps, explained before you start

1

Assessment

We examine your foot, how you walk and your footwear, and review your health history.

2

A clear plan

We explain your options in plain language, with fees, before any treatment begins.

3

Shockwave sessions

Usually 3 sessions, one week apart, with about 15 minutes of treatment each.

4

Exercises and footwear

A home exercise and footwear plan alongside your sessions, not instead of them.

What it feels like

A strong tapping, adjusted to you

Most people feel a strong tapping that can be uncomfortable but is adjusted to your tolerance. You can walk normally afterward. We tell you which activities to ease off for a day or two.

Questions

Before you book

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a strong tapping. It can be uncomfortable, and we adjust the intensity to what you can tolerate. You can walk normally when you leave.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually 3 sessions, one week apart. Your chiropodist confirms the plan after your assessment and reviews how you're doing as you go.

Is it covered by my benefits?

Many extended health plans reimburse treatment by a registered chiropodist. Check your plan's foot care coverage before you book. We don't bill insurers directly; you receive itemized receipts to submit to your plan.

Is it only for heel pain?

No. Besides heel and Achilles pain, shockwave is used for other tendon and soft tissue conditions of the foot, such as Morton's and other neuromas, capsulitis and forefoot pain. Your chiropodist tells you at your assessment whether it suits your condition.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book an assessment directly.

Will I need orthotics too?

Only if your assessment shows they are likely to help. We explain the reasons and the fees before anything is ordered.
